Shiro Games, the Bordeaux studio behind Evoland and Northgard, announced that Wartales gets its Knights of Fardensa expansion on December 9, 2026. The turn-based tactical RPG left early access in April 2023, and this expansion is the one that adds mounted combat. It costs $19.99, £16.99 or €19.99 on PC through Steam and GOG, with 10% off for its first two weeks.
Shiro’s family tree grows sideways. Evoland came in 2013 and Evoland 2 in 2015. Northgard took it to Viking strategy in 2018 (and last month to an auto-battler spin-off), and Dune: Spice Wars mixed 4X with real-time strategy. Wartales entered early access in December 2021, and Shiro now counts more than a million units sold.
A knight starts as a squire, and Wartales has done its years of carrying the gear. Pirates of Belerion gave it the sea in December 2023, The Skelmar Invasion brought siege battles in December 2024, and The Curse of Rigel sits on the shelf beside them. Knights of Fardensa is the company asking for its spurs.
The horse is free, and the title costs $19.99
A free major update arrives along with the expansion and unlocks the Horseman Mastery Class for all mercenaries. Game director Quentin Lapeyre said players can add cavalry "without replacing the characters they've developed." That is the right promise for a game where your company is the story. The release also lists horse breeding at Trading Posts beside that update, where you combine inherited traits and raise horses for specific tactical roles.
The paid part is a place and a plot. Fardensa is a Renaissance-inspired region of farmland and wild horse herds, and the Ald Hertogg family holds its trade and its horses. The Steam page says the lesser houses have formed an uneasy alliance against them, and you decide who rules.
A two-act campaign ends in the title of Knight. Along the way come trials of horsemanship and chivalry, legendary horses to tame, and new lances, weapons and horse tack to master. A second thread follows an ancient order that guards the truth about where the horses came from. That is where I stop.
The release names PC only, so Wartales owners on Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S have no date for either the expansion or the update. Everyone on Steam and GOG can watch this squire kneel on Wednesday, December 9.
