Aspyr announced DreamWorks Shrek 2 Remastered on October 20, a remaster of the 2004 Shrek 2 game, launching November 10, 2026. It is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. It costs $29.99, or $26.99 on digital pre-order. The question every retro reader asks comes next: which Shrek 2?
Because there were several. Luxoflux made the console game for Activision, out on PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox on May 4, 2004, in North America. Vicarious Visions made a separate side-scroller for the Game Boy Advance. PC players got two different games: KnowWonder’s version for younger players, and Beenox’s Shrek 2: Team Action, a port of the console game. Aspyr handled a Mac port back then, so this is something of a reunion (it is an Embracer company now).
What Aspyr says it rebuilt
Aspyr calls it “the definitive edition of the fan-favorite 2004 action-adventure game,” and the feature list points at the console version. You travel from Shrek’s swamp to Fiona’s castle and Far Far Away, and you swap heroes at any time to use their abilities on enemies, bosses and puzzles. That swap was Luxoflux’s trick in 2004. Aspyr says it rebuilt everything with better textures, an enhanced UI and new cutscenes, with 4K on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 docked.
The additions are a Photo Mode, a Cheats Menu, and co-op for up to four players on the couch, online, or a mix of both. Online play is the one addition that changes how a group plays it.
It was a decent game. Going by Wikipedia’s tally, Metacritic put the console versions between 70 and 72, and the GBA side-scroller matched them at 72. It sold more than 4 million units across its versions and won Favourite Video Game at the 2005 Kids’ Choice Awards. That is the licensed-game sweet spot of its era: better than it had to be, and not quite as good as the people who loved it remember.
Licensed games from those years rarely come back, because the license is a second set of lawyers. This one has Universal at the table and Shrek 5 in theaters on June 30, 2027, which explains the timing better than any anniversary could. The GBA side-scroller and both PC games go unmentioned, so assume they stay in 2004. Pre-orders are open on Steam and the other stores.
I still have the GameCube disc. It gets one more spin before November 10, so I can find out which of us remembers it wrong.
