Amanita Design announced Machinarium 2 on October 8, 2026, at the Triple-i Initiative showcase, 17 years after the first game. It’s coming to Steam for Windows and macOS, with no date or price yet, and you can wishlist it now. The Prague studio says more platforms will follow.
Machinarium is the game I point people to when they say an adventure game needs words. There isn’t a line of dialogue in it, so a sequel from the same studio goes straight to the top of my list.
The story starts where the first one ended. After escaping the city of Machinarium, Josef and Berta crash in the barrens and climb down a cliff into a hidden valley. Two robot tribes live there, one in the Elektrona monastery high on the rocks and one in the city of Oilton below. Both of them are slowly running out of power.
This time you control both robots and can switch between them whenever you like, and some puzzles need both of them at once. There’s still no text: the robots talk in animated comic bubbles, symbols and gestures. You can now play on a gamepad and walk the robots around directly, with no cursor, which the team says is the best way to play. Mouse controls are still there for anyone who wants to point and click.
“We’re not getting any younger, and the world seems to be ending,” Jakub Dvorský, Amanita’s CEO and a designer on the game, said of the timing. I can’t argue with either half of that.
Amanita kept busy after Machinarium. It made Botanicula, Samorost 3, Chuchel, Pilgrims, Creaks and Happy Game, and its newest is Phonopolis, which won the visual art award at the 2024 Independent Games Festival. The studio has about 30 people and works as several small teams, each on its own game. Samorost 3 is the only sequel in that list, and every one of those games looks different from the one before it.
Every scene in Machinarium 2 is hand-drawn, styled after old master drawings and Renaissance landscape paintings. Tomáš Dvořák, who records as Floex and scored the first game, is back for the music, with symphonic arrangements this time.
Wishlist it on Steam. If you never played the first one, Machinarium is 80% off on Steam until October 15.
