Atlus has released a Prologue Demo of Metaphor: ReFantazio on Nintendo Switch 2, and the family tree behind the game is easy to read. Its director, Katsura Hashino, directed Persona 3, 4 and 5 before leading Studio Zero inside Atlus. Shigenori Soejima drew the characters and Shoji Meguro wrote the music, the same pair from those Persona games.
The full game reaches Switch 2 on November 12, 2026, and progress from the demo carries over to it. It is a turn-based RPG with real-time strikes on the field. It came out on October 11, 2024, and is already on PC through Steam, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo’s store page lists touch screen support in TV, tabletop and handheld modes. RPG Site puts the demo download at 29.8 GB.
The hero, Will, carries a novel through a kingdom that has lost its king. That suits a demo that works like a book’s first chapter, handed over free before you buy the rest. Atlus lists what that chapter holds: the start of the journey to lift the prince’s curse, the first four dungeons, seven of the 40-plus classes called Archetypes, and six followers.
Where Archetypes and followers come from
Persona players will recognize the bones. Archetypes are the job system, and they work much like Personas, except that a party member can hold several and pass skills between them. Followers grow out of Social Links: spend time with someone, and new Archetypes open up. The calendar is there too, with story deadlines that end the game if you miss them. Wikipedia’s entry on the game traces the calendar and the bonds back to Persona. Battles keep the Press Turn rule from Shin Megami Tensei, where a hit on a weakness buys an extra turn and a miss costs one.
The inheritance has not hurt it. Metaphor sold a million copies on launch day, which Atlus says made it the studio’s fastest-selling game to date. It won Best RPG, Best Narrative and Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2024.
The demo ends where the first chapter does, and that is where I stop. The rest of the book arrives on November 12.
