CD PROJEKT RED announced Update 2.5 for Cyberpunk 2077 on Tuesday, a free patch it calls the Edgerunners 2 Update, on the same day Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premiered on Netflix. The update arrives October 22, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The Nintendo Switch 2 version follows “shortly,” with no date yet.
Every story set in Night City has to get you through a door, and the first Edgerunners was the widest door the game ever had. The anime landed in September 2022 alongside Update 1.6, and CD PROJEKT RED credited the pair for a jump in sales that quarter. Daily players stayed above one million for at least four weeks, by Wikipedia’s count. People came in through the show and found a game that had been patched into shape since launch.
The second door opened on Tuesday. Edgerunners 2 is ten episodes, all streaming now, made again by CD PROJEKT RED with the Japanese studio TRIGGER. Kai Ikarashi directs, Kanno Ichigo is lead character designer, and Bartosz Sztybor returns as showrunner, story writer and producer. The new cast is a veteran edgerunner, a young cinephile, a chrome-obsessed delinquent and a Snake Nation netrunner, and the studio calls it a story of vengeance and redemption. That is where I stop.
The update itself is mostly a promise so far. CD PROJEKT RED says 2.5 brings content inspired by the anime “as well as a range of other new items and features.” The full list comes on Wednesday, October 21, in a REDstreams episode on Twitch, YouTube and Steam, with the patch notes published the same day. I will not guess at it before then.
The patches that came before 2.5
Cyberpunk 2077 launched on December 10, 2020, and CD PROJEKT RED spent the next three years rebuilding it in public. Update 2.0 in September 2023 overhauled its core RPG systems days before the Phantom Liberty expansion. Update 2.1 followed that December. Then 2.2 arrived unexpectedly at the end of 2024, with Johnny Silverhand riding in the passenger seat. The Switch 2 version came on June 5, 2025, and the game has now sold more than 40 million copies.
Four years ago the anime held the door open for a game that was still catching up. This time the game is already waiting on the other side. Cyberpunk 2077 is on Steam, and 2.5 lands Thursday.
